In the final for the first championship ring of basketball Boston Celtics faced the team just before the Russell was selected in Draft of 1956 for St. Louis Hawks. In 1958, Russell was unable to lead his team towards achieving the second ring, which was coming up a year later in 1959. It was against the Minneapolis Lakers by a convincing 4-0 and Russell got his second ring. From this, there came seven more rings, between 1959 and 1966. In 1960 and 1961, they won back to St Louis Hawks 4-3 and 4-1 respectively. However, the great rival in the late 60s were Los Angeles Lakers. The Boston team won the Angeleno by 4-3 in 1962, by 4-2 in 1963, by 4-1 in 1965 and 4-3 in 1966. In 1964, the Boston team won against the San Francisco Warriors by 4-1. In 1967, Lakers and Boston reached the finals, but in 1968 and 1969 and returned to play the final with win by Boston by 2-4 and 3-4 respectively, getting Russell 11 rings.
In addition, Russell was recognized individually 12 times as part of the NBA All Stars, between 1958 and 1969, being the MVP in 1963 and was featured as the NBA's best defense in 1969. His number 6 was withdrawn at the Boston Celtics. And it was on up to five occasions highlighted as one of the highest values of the NBA in 1958, 1961, 1962, 1963 and 1965. He has been chosen among the 50 best players in NBA history’s list issued in 1996. He was also elected to join a selected group of basketball stars like the Basketball Hall of Fame.
